The vehicle speed sensor measures transmission/transaxle output or wheel speed. To initiate diagnostic routines, the ECM uses this information to modify engine functions such as ignition timing, air/fuel ratio, and transmission shift points.  The role of this sensor allows for adequate allocation of resources where needed.
